Although training is crucial to an actor’s success, there are many other skills that can help lead to a thriving career. Networking, goal-setting, better habits, and social media know-how are all important skills to possess that, unfortunately, many actors are never taught.
In honor of Paperback Book Day (July 30th), here are 8 books for actors (not about the craft of acting) that teach essentials skills to enrich your #actorslife.
(This is not your typical Actor Book list- most of them are NOT written by actors. And although this is for #PaperbackBookDay, many are available in audiobook, paperback and hardcover)
NETWORKING
You’ve heard over and over again “It’s who you know in this business!” Well, it’s true! What’s not true is that networking has to be scary, or worse, sleazy. Networking is really about building relationships with the industry professionals who might be able to help you. Here are 2 books to help you work on your networking skills:
“Never Eat Alone: And Other Secrets to Success, One Relationship at a Time.” By: Keith Ferrazzi
(CLICK ON ANY BOOK IN THIS ARTICLE TO LEARN MORE)
And for my introverted actors (I see you):
The Introvert’s Edge to Networking. Work the Room Leverage Social Media. Develop Powerful Connections By: Matthew Pollard
BETTER HABITS
Better Than Before: What I Learned About Making and Breaking Habits–to Sleep More, Quit Sugar, Procrastinate Less, and Generally Build a Happier Life By: Gretchen Rubin
I feel like the title speaks for itself. This book will help you understand your habits—and to change them for good. Whether you want to eat more healthfully, stop checking devices, or finally finish something for your #actorslife, this book will start you working on your own habits—even before you’ve finished the book. It’s a new favorite of mine and an essential read for actors (and all humans).
OVERCOMING REJECTION
10,000 NOs: How to Overcome Rejection on the Way to Your YES By: Matthew Del Negro
Actor Matthew Del Negro shares his journey through countless rejections to becoming a recognizable face on acclaimed TV shows. In “10,000 NOs,” he offers lessons on perseverance, persistence, and resilience. Del Negro’s experiences, along with inspiring anecdotes from his podcast guests, teach readers how to navigate tough times and follow their passion, making this book a must-read for anyone facing rejection in their career.
BRANDING
Primal branding By: Patrick Hanlon
Ever wonder why some people love Google or Taylor Swift or Oprah but not others? Patrick Hanlon, a senior advertising executive, reveals seven key assets that construct the belief system behind every successful brand. Learn how to create a powerful brand, whether it’s a product, service, personality, or movement, from someone who has worked with the likes of Absolut, LEGO, and Disney. This book is responsible for the early success of my Youtube channel- It’s a must read for anyone trying to build a community online.
THE REAL #ACTORSLIFE
The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide By: Jenna Fischer
An amusing look at the business from The Office’s Jenna Fischer. Fischer spells out the nuts and bolts of getting established in the profession, based on her own memorable and hilarious experiences. She tells you how to get the right headshot, what to look for in representation, and the importance of joining forces with other like-minded artists and creating your own work. I’m crossing my fingers this book gets a post-pandemic update (now that the business is so digital), but nonetheless, it’s a fantastic look at the business of acting.
INSPIRATION
The Actor’s Book of Quotes: Words of Wisdom for Performing Artists By: Mike Kimmel
An acting career is usually filled with more no’s than yes’s, and sometimes it can be very difficult to stay positive. Remember, our thoughts shape everything in our lives that we feel and experience. Mike Kimmel has put together a fantastic collection of quotes for actors that will inspire you PLUS it can also provide help for social media content. We all know people love a good quote on social media.
SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING
Five years ago, social media would never be on this list, but social media has become one of the best (totally free) PR tools available to actors. Unfortunately, most actors simply don’t know how to use it or how to use it to their advantage for their careers. The good news is, social media (just like any other skill) can be learned. And the better news is I put 100 essential social media skills for actors in a book just for you:
So, take a short break from your Stanislavsky, Meisner, Adler, and Moss, and start improving yourself, your “business,” and building real relationships with the people you want to know!

PS This is NOT sponsored but I am an Amazon Influencer and make a small amount if you purchase these items in my blogs or videos. But I only share things I personally use and love OR things my husband (who’s an actor) uses for his self tapes and virtual auditions.
